Welcome Dr. Waltz!

August 11, 2017

Press Release

Washington County will experience a solar eclipse August 21, 2017.  While there will not be a total eclipse in the Washington County area, a partial eclipse is still dangerous enough to cause concern for student and bus driver safety.  Predictions call for the darkest period of the eclipse to take place during our normal time of student dismissal.  We further understand that the most critical time for eye safety is the entire three hour window which will be approximately 1:10 to 4:10 p.m.

In an abundance of caution, the Washington County Board of Education has amended the 2017-2018 School Calendar.  The in-service day originally scheduled for March 16, 2018, will be moved to Monday, August 21, 2017.  This will ensure that there will be no loss of instructional days for the current school year. Therefore, August 21, 2017, will be an in-service day for staff and a student holiday.  There will be no classes August 21.

Washington County Public School teachers will provide instructional lessons concerning the solar eclipse prior to August 21.  We will also make eclipse glasses available for your child. Please let his/her teacher know if you would like a pair sent home. The eye wear should be tested prior to use and only used under the supervision of an adult.

Thank you in advance for working with the District to amend the 2017-2018 School Calendar in order to take the extra steps to ensure the welfare of our students. As always, the safety of students remains the top priority of Washington County Public Schools.
